How to Use Track Clamps on the HDS Portable Workbench

What Are Track Clamps?

Track clamps (also known as T-track clamps or F-style clamps) are a versatile clamping solution designed to slide into T-slots or clamping slots and lock a workpiece firmly in place. Unlike traditional F-clamps that hang off the edge of a bench, track clamps sit within the surface itself — keeping your workpiece flat, stable, and fully accessible from above.

How Track Clamps Work with the HDS

The HDS Portable Workbench features integrated clamping slots running across the board surface. Track clamps slide directly into these slots and can be positioned anywhere along their length, giving you flexible, tool-free clamping at any point on the bench.

Setting Up Track Clamps on the HDS — Step by Step

1. Slide the track clamp into the clamping slot from either end.
2. Position it roughly where you need it — don't lock it down yet.
3. Place your workpiece on the bench surface.
4. Slide the clamp up against the edge of the workpiece.
5. Tighten the clamp down to lock it in position.
6. Repeat on the opposite side or end for two-directional hold.

Getting the Clamping Pressure Right

Track clamps work best with firm, even pressure — not overtightened. Over-clamping thin stock can cause bowing or surface marks. For finished surfaces, place a scrap offcut between the clamp face and your workpiece to prevent bruising.

Using Track Clamps for Different Tasks

Routing

Track clamps are ideal for routing operations. With the workpiece held flat and the clamps sitting within the surface, your router travels freely across the full panel without obstruction.

Sawing

Use two track clamps — one either side of your cut line — to hold the workpiece firmly while you saw. The HDS overhang gives you clearance for the saw blade beneath.

Planing and Sanding

For edge planing or sanding, a single track clamp at each end provides enough restraint to work confidently without the board shifting.

Glue-ups

Track clamps can act as a light clamping solution for small glue-ups directly on the HDS surface — useful when you need a flat reference plane during assembly.

Track Clamps vs. Bench Dogs — Which Should You Use?

Both work beautifully on the HDS, and the best setups often combine the two. As a rule of thumb: bench dogs excel at holding flat panels face-up for planing and surface work, while track clamps are better for edge work, routing, and holding irregular or smaller pieces. Used together, they cover almost every workholding scenario you'll encounter.

Tips for Better Results

• Position clamps close to where you're working to minimise flex in the workpiece.
• Use a pair of clamps for anything longer than 300mm.
• Combine with bench dogs for two-axis hold on larger panels.
• Keep the slot clear of dust and shavings for smooth clamp travel.
